Valheim developer Iron Gate has revealed a broad release window for the long-awaited Ashlands update.

According to a new developer blog on Steam, the Ashlands update will be released "sometime during the first half of 2024". As usual, it'll come to the public test branch first, then be released for the full game afterwards.

The Ashlands update has been a long time coming; Valheim's last major update, Mistlands, was released in November 2022, with no subsequent updates reaching the same scale.

The Valheim Ashlands update will bring new dishes in addition to the wealth of other content it's adding.

As detailed in previous developer blogs, the Ashlands update will bring a new volcanic biome to Valheim, as well as other additions like new enemies and fresh gameplay systems.

It may still be a ways off, but to tide you over, Iron Gate has released the first of a new video series called Walk & Talk, which is similar to the developer's previous Fireside Chat videos.

The first installment is all about the development process behind the Ashlands update, as well as how the team works in general.

If you're not familiar with Valheim, it's an open-world survival crafting game with a strong Viking theme.

Players must band together to survive the harsh environments and hostile inhabitants of the titular Valheim in order to prove themselves worthy to take their place at Odin's side in Valhalla.

You can play Valheim solo or enjoy it alongside other players, and it allows you to build structures, craft gear, and explore the procedurally-generated world around you to find bosses to help you progress.

Valheim was first released in 2021, whereupon it managed to reach a million sales within a week of its launch.

Within just a few weeks, the game had reached four million sales, going on to hit five million in just over a month. It would eventually also come to Xbox Game Pass on both PC and console, where it's still available.
