In our Valheim Animals Guide, we'll tell you how to find Animals like Boars and Chickens, how to tame them, and what you'll get for killing them!
How Valheim Animals Work
There are quite a few Valheim Animals that can be tamed and raised as livestock. While all of these Animals provide some kind of Food, they also tend to provide some kind of extra benefit or item that makes them doubly useful.
Unfortunately, it isn't quite as easy to get your hands on some of these Animals. You'll have to track them down and, in some cases, guide them to your base. Read on for more details!
How to Butcher Tamed Animals in Valheim
You can butcher Animals in Valheim by Crafting a Butcher Knife at the Forge. This will allow you to kill your tamed Animals.
How to Raise Bees in Valheim
Bees are one of the Valheim Animals that are easiest to care for -- they will continue to produce Honey for free once you've built a Beehive. Bees produce Honey, which is used in some Cooking Recipes and is essential for brewing Potions and Mead.
Where to Find Bees
Bees can be found by looking for natural Beehives in the Meadows Biome, typically in abandoned wood houses. Once you find one, destroy it (or the structure supporting it) and a Queen Bee will drop. That Queen Bee can then be used to Build a Beehive at your base. Don't linger in the area for too long, though -- natural Bees will attack you and cause a small amount of Poison damage.
How to Tame Bees
Bees are not "tamed" in the same way as other Animals in Valheim. However, you need to ensure that they have enough space around their Beehives or they won't produce Honey. It's a good idea to space the Beehives apart and place them on top of poles as shown in the above image.
How to Breed Bees
Breeds cannot be bred in Valheim. The only way to get more Bees is by finding additional Queen Bees.
Bee Drops
Bees produce Honey continuously until their Beehive is destroyed. Once a Beehive is built and has enough space around it, all you need to do is occasionally collect the Honey as it builds up.
How to Raise Boars in Valheim
Boars are one of the most annoying Valheim Animals to deal with in the early game, all the more so because they drop the Leather Scraps you need to create useful things such as Boats.
Where to Find Boars
Boars can only be found in the Meadows Biome in Valheim. They'll spawn irregularly throughout the Meadows, but you can find a large concentration of them by looking for a "Boar Runestone," which has the following text:
This land is hard and wild but we who are brought here are harder still. Take comfort, traveler, in the gifts before you, the good wood and stone, the fruits and flowers of the forest.
Look also to the wild boar who roam these lands. They fear fire and the hand of man but they can be taught to obey it. Go quietly to them and let them eat of your stock. Roots of the ground are their pleasure.
Mark Boar Runestones on your Map -- they'll be a good early source of Boar Meat and Leather Scraps. This Runestone also happens to give clues on how you can domesticate Boars.
How to Tame Boars
You can tame Boars in Valheim by sneaking up to them and dropping Carrots or Red Mushrooms. If you can successfully feed them, they will eventually settle in and become tamed, although it may take more than one feeding to make this happen.
It should be noted that there is no organized way to move Boars around once they're tamed. It may be wise to goad them into chasing you into a pen that you can trap them in.
How to Breed Boars
Boars in Valheim will automatically breed when two of them are nearby, Happy, and Fed. There's a limit on how many Boars can be in an area, so make sure you build a large pen to accommodate enough of them.
Boar Drops
Boars drop Boar Meat, Leather Scraps, and Boar Trophies.
How to Raise Chickens in Valheim
Chickens are a new addition to Valheim as of the Mistlands Update, paving the way for some additional Cooking recipes. They are a little more difficult to raise than Boars, but you can manage it as long as you know what you're doing.
Where to Find Chickens
Chickens cannot be found in the wild in Valheim as far as we can tell; rather, you have to find the Merchant and purchase a Chicken Egg from him for 1,500 Gold.
How to Tame Chickens
Chickens will be tamed once they've been fed and grown up; simply feed them Seeds (such as Beech Seeds or Carrot Seeds) to gain their trust. Do not, however, that they cannot eat Fir Cones as far as I can tell.
How to Breed Chickens
Chickens will eventually grow up into Hens and will produce Eggs as long as they're Fed and Happy. However, you can't just let the Eggs sit on the ground. The Eggs have to be Warm, and that means you'll need to do a little Building:
If you want to get Chicken Eggs to hatch, you'll need to have them sheltered under a roof and next to a source of heat such as a Campfire. That doesn't mean you should toss the Chicken Egg right next to the fire, though -- a newly-spawned Chicken can easily walk into the flame and instantly die, and that can hurt a lot if it's the first egg you bought.
Once you've built a sheltered area with a fire, toss an Egg on the ground and wait a few seconds. If it changes from "Cold" to "Warm," it will eventually hatch into a Chicken. That Chicken will grow into a Hen in a couple of days and start producing Chicken Eggs as long as it's Fed.
Chicken Drops
Chickens will drop Chicken Meat and Feathers when killed.
How to Raise Lox in Valheim
Lox are some of the biggest and toughest creatures you'll encounter in Valheim, but they can also become powerful allies if you manage to tame them. Believe it or not, the Lox is Valheim's equivalent of a mount.
Where to Find Lox
Lox can be found in the Plains Biome, typically traveling in herds of 2-4 Loxen. Lox are pretty huge and are difficult to miss.
How to Tame Lox
As with Boars, you'll have to sneak up to a Lox and drop Cloudberries nearby. If the Lox eats enough Cloudberries, it will be Tamed.
How to Breed Lox
Lox will breed as long as there are two Happy and Fed Lox that are near each other. However, there is a limit to how many Lox can breed within an area -- make sure you have a very large pen so they have enough room.
Lox Drops
Lox drop Lox Meat and Lox Pelt. Lox Meat is an excellent source of Food towards the mid-game, and Lox Pelt is used for both decoration and Crafting Capes.
How to Get a Mount and Ride Lox
You can ride tamed Lox once you equip them with a Lox Saddle. Here's what it takes to make one:
- 10 Leather Scraps
- 20 Linen Thread
- 15 Black Metal
How to Raise Wolves in Valheim
Wolves are fearsome enemies that occupy the Mountains Biome. These are one of the most dangerous Valheim Animals you could possibly encounter in the early game; players straying too far up into the Mountains will learn a painful lesson all too quickly.
Successfully tame a Wolf, however, and you will find yourself a powerful ally. Unlike other Animals, Wolves will follow you if you interact with them. They'll protect you in the wild, and a pack of them is a force to be reckoned with.
Where to Find Wolves
Wolves can be found in the Mountains Biome in Valheim.
How to Tame Wolves
Wolves can be tamed by feeding them raw meat, such as Deer Meat or Boar Meat. That's the easy part.
The hard part, however, is getting them into an area where you can sneak up on them to tame them. I strongly recommend digging a pit or building a pen and luring the Wolves into it so they can't escape. This will allow you to hold them in place while you tame them.
How to Breed Wolves
As with all Animals, Wolves will breed as long as they are Fed, Happy, and have enough space around them.
Wolf Drops
Wolves drop Wolf Meat, Wolf Fangs, Wolf Pelts, and Wolf Trophies.
How to Raise Asksvin in Valheim
Asksvin are massive lizards that are immediately hostile to anyone who spooks them, but that doesn't mean that they can't be tamed. Heck, you can even ride them if you can manage to make one of these deadly beasts your friend.
Where to Find Asksvin
You can find Asksvin in the Ashlands Biome in Valheim.
How to Tame Asksvin
Asksvin can be tamed by feeding them Vineberries, Smoke Puffs, or Fiddleheads. There appears to be no difference in preference for these foods.
You can also loot Asksvin Eggs and get them to hatch the same way that you do with Chickens. This may be more challenging, however.
Asksvin are fairly strong creatures and Stone Walls will not hold them for long. If you're looking to tame some Asksvin, it is probably best to dig a deep, inescapable pit and drag them into it with a Harpoon. You can then throw food down there and wait it out.
How to Breed Asksvin
Asksvin are bred much like any other animal: they will mate as long as they are happy, well-fed, and have enough space to move around in their pen. You can also hatch Asksvin Eggs.
Asksvin Drops
Asksvin can drop Asksvin Hide, Asksvin Tail, and Asksvin Bladder. Naturally, you have a small chance to get an Asksvin Trophy, too.
How to Ride Asksvin
You can ride tamed Asksvin once you equip them with an Asksvin Saddle. Here's what you need to make one:
- 6 Flametal
- 20 Linen Thread
- 4 Morgen Sinew
You'll likely come across a good few Morgens when you're trying to get the legendary Dyrnwyn Sword.
