Pokemon Scarlet and Violet - Recommended Order

Pokemon has been steadily moving towards a more open format and this trend continued with Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. From the moment you receive your first Pokemon the world is your cloyster giving you the chance to set out on your adventure any way you wish.

There are three different story paths that you will be completing in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, each with its own reward. There is no power scaling though so that first gym, even if you skip it, will remain around the level 15 mark. Listed below is the recommended order that you complete each of the adventures.

Victory Road

This is the standard Pokemon adventure where you will defeat gym leaders, earn badges, and make your way to the Pokemon League to challenge the Elite 4. These levels are based on the team of the Gym Leader, as well as the pre-battles if there are any.

With each Badge you earn, you'll be able to control Pokemon at higher levels. You'll also be able to take more classes at school.

  1. Grass Gym - Low 10s
  2. Bug Gym - Early 20s
  3. Electric Gym - Early 20s
  4. Water Gym - Late 20s
  5. Normal Gym - Mid 30s
  6. Ghost Gym - Early 40s
Note: This Gym consists of Double Battles
  7. Psychic Gym - Mid 40s
  8. Ice Gym - Late 40s
  9. Elite 4 - Mid 60s

Starfall Street

The Starfall Street Quest has you taking on Team Star, a rival group within the Academy that has bases set up around Paldea. For each Team Star base you'll be challenged to defeat 30 Pokemon in 10 minutes using the Let's Go quick battle system, and then will have a battle against the local boss.

Each Team Star base you take down will earn you a badge, LP, and the ability to create more TMs at Pokemon Centers. These levels are based on the Team Star Boss's ace Pokemon.

  1. Dark - Level 20
  2. Fire - Level 28
  3. Poison - Level 32
  4. Fairy - Level 50
  5. Fighting - Level 56

Path of Legends

The Path of Legends has you hunting down the legendary Herba Mystica, an ingredient said to cure any ailment. In order to obtain these you need to defeat the giant Titan Pokemon that protect them. The format of these quests is to battle the Titan Pokemon on your own, it gets powered up and then you'll double battle with it.

The reward for defeating the Titan Pokemon is that you'll be able to power up Koraidon/Miraidon and obtain more traversal abilities. Check out our How To Upgrade Your Ride Pokemon Guide for more information.

As well as completely new Pokemon there are also Future and Ancient variants of Pokemon that we previously know. An example of this is Donphan, whose Ancient variant is called Great Tusk, and his Future version is known as Iron Treads.

You can learn more about where to obtain Great Tusk or Iron Treads by checking out our How To Get Legendary and Paradox Pokemon Guide.

Take some time and attend your classes

With each cleared Gym you'll gain access to more classes at school. These classes can teach you about battle strategies, feeding your Pokemon, and the history of the Paldea region. Each class will also have a midterm and a final exam. The rewards for passing these respectively is 5x Small Exp Candies and 5x Medium Exp Candies, if you complete all classes you'll obtain 5x Large Exp Candies.

  • Tournaments where you can challenge and rechallenge a variety of strong trainers you've met across your Paldea adventures
  • Rematches against the Gym Leaders at higher levels
  • Fully explore the new map region

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet - Frequently Asked Questions

How can I breed my Pokemon?

A new mechanic in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is the Pokemon Picnic. Here you can perform a variety of activities with your Pokemon including spending time pampering them, walking around with your whole team out, and making sandwiches for them. While you're in Pokemon Picnic there's also a chance that an egg will appear near your picnic table in a picnic basket.

If your party is filled with different Pokemon then it's not completely understood which will breed but as eggs can stack in the picnic basket.

Can I see Shiny Pokemon in the overworld in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet?

Shiny Pokemon appear in their shiny form in the overworld. A tricky part of Shiny Hunting in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is that they don't make any special sound or sparkle when they spawn like in previous games. You'll need to keep an eye out for any differently colored Pokemon that you might encounter in the world.

There are three different ways that you can end up with a Pokemon whose Teratype is different to their normal typing:

  1. Tera Raids - These are glowing crystals that appear across the map. You'll know from their look what type they are, but in approaching and interacting with them you'll be able to verify what Pokemon will be present in it.
  2. Glowing Pokemon - At certain points across the map there will be Pokemon that will be sparkling and generating their own light (not to be confused with shiny Pokemon). These Pokemon will also have a special Tera Type
  3. Change their Tera Type yourself - Collect 50 Tera Shards of the type that you want to change the pokemon too, and then travel to the Legend Treasure Restaurant

How do I get Tera Blast?

You obtain the TM for Tera Blast after defeating your fifth gym and battling Nemona. It will be given to you by Geeta.

Tera Blast is a special attack that will use the typing of whatever the Pokemon has Terastallized into. The move will specifically use the higher stat between Attack or Special Attack. After you obtain the TM you'll then be able to craft it at the TM Machine in Pokemon Centers.
