This guide will tell you how to get a Backpack in Abiotic Factor after opening the Cafeteria Doors and how you can get bigger Backpacks later in the game.

You'll pick up lots of different resources as you're playing Abiotic Factor and you're going to need somewhere to store all of those crafting supplies and food you've found. A Backpack can seriously increase your inventory space — read on to learn how to get one and how each of the Backpacks work!

The Military Pack doubles the number of slots in your inventory, but you can only get it once you've reached the Manufacturing Sector.

How to Get a Backpack in Abiotic Factor

You can get a Backpack in Abiotic Factor in the first hour of the game as long as you know where to go. First, you'll need to power up the door that allows you to exit the Cafeteria.

Next, head into the Plaza with the large fountain and the security kiosk. Turn left and walk up the stairs toward the Data Farm, a massive, open-air office. Once you're inside, you're going to look for a manager's office with glass paneling on the side.

Walk toward that office. Watch out for hostile aliens — there are many Pests and one or two Peccaries wandering around the offices here.

Head into the office and you'll find a bunch of useful items. Look to the left of the entrance and you'll see a Basic Backpack on the ground.

Amazingly, there is another Backpack not too far away from here — and it's even better.

Go behind this office and look over the ledge — you'll see a thin platform leading to a ladder.

Climb down the ladder.

Once you're at the bottom, go into a tunnel and you'll find a dead GATE employee with a Security Pack and a number of useful resources.

The Basic Backpack gives you 6 additional spaces in your inventory, and the Security Pack gives you 9 additional inventory slots. As with most equipment, your equipped Backpack will stay with your character if you die — although you'll lose everything inside of it and you'll have to retrieve your corpse to get the contents back.

You can get this particular Basic Backpack and a Security Pack a few minutes after you open the Cafeteria doors, but it won't be of much help to the rest of your team if you're playing in multiplayer. Fortunately, you can craft a Backpack for everyone using some pretty basic supplies to tide your team over until you find more Backpacks in other places.

You'll collect a lot of backpacks as time goes on — there will be more than enough to go around for your whole team before you know it.

Abiotic Factor Backpack List

Here is a list of every Abiotic Factor backpack we've found and where you can get them.

Makeshift Backpack

  • Capacity: 15
  • Weight Reduction: 10%
  • Weight: 2

The Makeshift Backpack can be crafted for 2 Cloth Scrap and 1 Metal Pipe. It's fairly cheap, but it will only give you 3 additional inventory slots and a slight Weight reduction.

Basic Backpack

  • Capacity: 18
  • Weight Reduction: 15%
  • Weight: 3

The Basic Backpack is the first Backpack you'll be able to find in the Office Sector. There are multiple Basic Backpacks spread all throughout the Office Sector and Manufacturing Sector, and they can drop from Zombies that you find in the Furniture Store Portal World or during the Zombie base raids.

At first, you'll only find blue Basic Backpacks. You can eventually find a total of seven different colors of Basic Backpack. These alternate colors are typically dropped randomly by Zombies.

Security Pack

  • Capacity: 21
  • Weight Reduction: 14%
  • Weight: 4

The Security Pack is a rarer Backpack that has 3 more slots than the Basic Backpack. I've only ever found one in a ventilation system, but you won't be using it for very long since you're likely to enter the Manufacturing Sector soon and you'll be able to find better backpacks from the Order soldiers in there.

Radio Pack

  • Capacity: 21
  • Weight Reduction: 12%
  • Weight: 4
  • Greatly reduces Battery drain when worn.

The Radio Pack has a smaller capacity than the Military Pack, but it has an advantage — it reduces the drain of your battery-powered devices while you're wearing it (such as the Flashlight).

This Backpack is dropped by Order soldiers who are carrying it, so this is a renewable resource provided that you can successfully kill the soldiers carrying it. You can also scrap it at the Repair & Salvage Station for Military Electronics, among other items.

Military Pack

  • Capacity: 24
  • Weight Reduction: 20%
  • Weight: 4

The Military Pack can be acquired once you've entered the Manufacturing Sector. Although you may be able to find one lying around, you're much more likely to get one by killing Order soldiers.

This Backpack is dropped by Order soldiers if you can manage to kill them, making it a renewable resource.

Rat Pack

  • Capacity: 30
  • Weight Reduction: 0%
  • Weight: 10

The Rat Pack gives you a massive Capacity of 30, but it has no weight reduction whatsoever. There is a chance to get it by killing a Rat.

Research Pack

  • Capacity: 30
  • Weight Reduction: 22%
  • Weight: 6
  • Reduces radioactive output of inventory items

The Research Pack can be crafted with 2 Carbon Plating, 2 Anteverse Gel. 4 Metal Pipe, and 8 Metal Scrap. This means that you'll have to visit The Mycofields Portal World and gather the unique resources there before you can make this.

Unlike many other recipes, you'll need to inspect a specific whiteboard to unlock the Research Pack:

Whiteboard Showing the Research Pack Backpack in Abiotic Factor

This whiteboard can be found in a conference room on the top floor of the Adjustment Wing in the Cascade Laboratories Sector. Take an elevator to the upper floor and then look for a staircase heading up to find it.

Jetpack

  • Capacity: 24
  • Weight Reduction: 20%
  • Weight: 10
  • Battery: 150
  • Allows flight by jumping twice

The Jetpack can be crafted for 2 Power Cells, 1 Air Compressor, 4 Coil Winding, and 4 Transformer Bushing; these resources can be found in the Hydroplant, so you won't be able to get it for quite some time.

As the name implies, the Jetpack allows you to fly in the air for a limited time by double-jumping. This lets you access areas that you otherwise wouldn't be able to. Unfortunately, you'll lose quite a bit of potential carrying capacity in exchange for this ability.

Alpine Pack

  • Capacity: 30
  • Weight Reduction: 33%
  • Weight: 4
  • Cold Resistance: +1

You can get an Alpine Pack by killing soldiers in the Voussoir Portal World. It has the unique distinction of providing Cold Resistance — a necessary stat in that snowy region. It also happens to be the biggest backpack in Abiotic Factor up until that point.

The Alpine Pack can be scrapped for Kevlar Scrap, making it one of the ways that you can renewably farm this resource (albeit at a pretty slow rate).

Voidpack

  • Capacity: 36
  • Weight Reduction: 25%
  • Weight: 8
  • Display a portal effect on your back

You can craft a Voidpack with 1 Laser Prism, 2 Carbon Plating, 2 Transformer Bushing, and 1 Hyper Dense Neural Chip. Most of these items can be found in the Hydroplant Sector, so you shouldn't expect to get it before then.

Additionally, you'll need to get the crafting schematic for the Voidpack by examining a particular hologram found in the Hydroplant Sector:

The Voidpack Recipe Location in Abiotic Factor

You can find this Hologram in the Waterfall Apartments on an upper floor. This area is rife with Order Snipers and extra-tough Security Bots, so make sure to bring strong armor and plenty of healing supplies.
