Our Abiotic Factor Power Guide will tell you how the Power system works, how you can store Power overnight, and how you can split a Plug Socket into multiple wires.
Part of building a base in Abiotic Factor requires the use of some Power — you'll need Power for crafting and for traps to defend your base against attacks. However, the Power system can be a little difficult to understand, so we've made this guide to explain it all. Read on to learn all about Power!
How Power Works in Abiotic Factor
The GATE facility has an odd Power system — every night, all of the lights shut off at 9:00 PM, all of the Power Sockets go offline, and Security Bots roam the halls. This means that you won't be able to do any crafting or cooking until the Power comes back on at 6:00 AM. Additionally, security bots leave their pods and begin to patrol their areas.
Power is otherwise infinite during the daytime and never runs out. Eventually, you'll gain the ability to store Power overnight with batteries and extend the reach of Power Sockets. You'll soon be able to run an entire base out of a single Power Socket with the right equipment!
You might not expect it, but Portal Worlds will also have Power Sockets in certain spots. Sometimes, these Power Sockets are attached to a portable generator; other times, they are a part of the buildings you'll find in Portal Worlds. That means that you could build a base in a Portal World if you wanted to!
How to Get a Battery | Keep the Power On at Night
Batteries will allow you to save up Power during the day and run your machines at night, allowing you to work at any time of the day should you decide to do so.
Making a Battery (Makeshift) requires the following items:
- 1 Coil
- 2 Metal Scrap
- 1 Energy Brick
- 1 Power Supply Unit
- 1 Circuit Board
- 1 Tech Scrap
- 1 Case Fan
Each battery can only store so much Power. The amount of stored Power is indicated by the yellow bar on the battery, with Power being used represented by the blue bar. Once the Battery runs dry, all connected devices will go offline until Power is restored at 6:00 AM.
A battery has an incoming plug slot and an outgoing plug slot. You need to plug the Power Socket into the battery and then plug the battery into the device(s) you wish to power. Multiple batteries can be connected together in sequence to allow for a larger pool of stored Power.
If desired, you can craft a Lever to cut off Power to certain elements of your electrical grid. This allows you to shut down specific devices, turn on traps, or hold some batteries in reserve if needed.
Best Way to Use Batteries
The best way to use Batteries is to place one or two Batteries directly behind the device rather than further up the chain. For example, don't do this:
Power Socket > Battery > Plug Strip > Crafting Bench
Instead, you should do this:
Power Socket > Plug Strip > Battery > Crafting Bench
As far as we can tell, there seems to be diminishing returns when you connect several batteries together. The best thing to do is to split up wires using Plug Strips, connect the wires to one or two Batteries, and then connect those Batteries to the device you want to power. Essentially, each device should have its own Battery.
How to Split a Power Socket
Unfortunately, each Plug Socket only has one wire. If you want to use multiple machines, you'll either need to use multiple Plug Sockets or craft a Plug Strip to split the connection.
A Plug Strip requires the following items:
- 1 Power Supply Unit
- 1 Coil
- 2 Metal Scrap
Much like batteries, Plug Strips can be daisy-chained and connected to each other. You can meet most of your crafting and cooking needs from a single Plug Socket if desired through clever use of Plug Strips and Batteries.
How to Extend Wires
You can extend wires if you have Tech Scrap in your inventory. Here's how to do it:
- Grab a Plug from a Power Socket, Plug Strip, or Battery.
- Look at a flat surface and you'll see a blue square pop up. Left-click and you'll place a Cable Reroute.
- Grab the Plug from the Cable Reroute and plug it into your device (or repeat the process to extend it further).
A Cable Reroute costs 1 Tech Scrap. There isn't really a practical limit to how many you can use as far as we can tell; you could therefore run a series of Cable Reroutes from one Plug Socket to a safer location where you can actually build your base.
