Lightyear Frontier Farming Guide - Cover Image Polyberry and Other Crops in Several Small Plots in The Meadows

In this Lightyear Frontier Farming Guide, we'll tell you how farming works, where to find new crops, and how to build a source of water for your Farm!

Crafting new items in Lightyear Frontier is going to require a lot of resources and farming is an important part of that equation — you'll need these plants to make special oils and other items. Read on to learn everything you need to know about farming!

Discovering the Polyberry Resource after harvesting it from a Small Plot

How Farming Works

Farming in Lightyear Frontier works pretty much as you'd expect: you get seeds, plant them in a field, and water them daily. Once they've grown, you'll be able to harvest your crops and plant them again.

You can get seeds by harvesting the unique plants in each Region. You will only get seeds; you'll have to grow the seeds on your farm to get the actual plants. Seeds (and other crafting resources) will not spawn until you've restored a Region.

Each crop takes 2–4 days to grow. You'll need to water them every day, naturally, unless it's raining. You'll also want to make sure you harvest them right away — if you leave a grown crop in a field for too long, it will rot and you'll lose the harvest.

Naturally, farming requires tilled soil. You'll have to build farming plots at first, but you can eventually till the ground itself with the "Field Plow" upgrade.

How to Build a Well | Get a Renewable Source of Water

If you're looking for a Well or something similar for your farm, you're going to have to wait a while — the only way to get a buildable source of water is to get the Pondpitcher plant in the Lowland Plains.

Unfortunately, the Lowland Plains is the last area that you'll be able to unlock after upgrading your Mech. That's why it's important to build your farm near a natural water source such as a pond or river.

Making Fertilizer in a Compost Box in Lightyear Frontier

How Fertilizer Works | How to Make Fertilizer

Fertilizer will increase the yields of the crops you harvest. According to our tests, you'll get approximately 20% more crops when you harvest them. We don't yet know if this stacks with the Bountiful Yield Homestead bonus.

You can get Fertilizer by placing biological materials (such as Plant Fiber or other crops) into a Compost Box. Compost Boxes can be built once you've restored the Yellow Forest region and gained access to the Zappertwig plant. Fertilizer will be available for collection at the start of the next day.

How to Use Fertilizer

You can use Fertilizer by selecting your Irrigation Hose on the Tool Wheel and pressing E or R to switch to Fertilizer mode. You can then spray Fertilizer onto plots just like you can spray water.

As far as we can tell, you have a maximum capacity of Fertilizer. Once it runs out, you'll have to make more.

How to Remove Crops

There are two ways to remove Crops in Lightyear Frontier:

  1. Use the Spike Saw to destroy Crops.
  2. Use Building Mode to remove a farming plot.

Lightyear Frontier Farming Crops List

Here is a list of all of the crops you can find in Lightyear Frontier.

Polyberry

  • Region: The Meadows
  • Days to Grow: 2

Polyberry is the first farming crop that you'll be able to get in The Meadows. It won't have much use after you've crafted the early-game Mech Upgrades, but it grows quickly and that makes it a prime candidate for selling it to the Merchant.

Caroot

  • Region: Pine Heights
  • Days to Grow: 3

Caroot is one of the first crops that you can get pretty early in the game since you can restore Pine Heights with your default Mech equipment.

Rabbage

  • Region: Edge Cliffs
  • Days to Grow: 3

Much like Caroot, you can get Rabbage pretty quickly since you can restore Edge Cliffs with your default Mech equipment.

Chromaize

  • Region: Stepstone Peak
  • Days to Grow: 3

Chromaize is basically shiny corn. Aside from looking nice, it's used in some Tier 2

Zappertwig

  • Region: Yellow Forest
  • Days to Grow: 3

Aside from its oil, Zappertwig is needed to make Batteries — and you're gonna need a lot of Batteries for some of the later Mech Upgrades. Make sure to get every Zappertwig seed that you can.

Honeybottle

  • Region: Mountainside Coast, Lowland Plains
  • Days to Grow: 2

Honeybottle is one of two crops that can be found in multiple Regions (the other being Lumbloom). It's used to make Wax, among other things.

Lumbloom

  • Region: Mountainside Coast, Lowland Plains, Tornado Rock Isle
  • Days to Grow: 4

This strange, glowing plant can be used to make Lightbulbs at a Furnace once you've gotten your hands on Clay. It is also one of two crops that can be found in multiple Regions.

Coilvine

  • Region: Tornado Rock Isle
  • Days to Grow: 4

Coilvine can only be found on Tornado Rock Isle, the island to the northeast of the map. It's needed for some of the best Mech Upgrades.

Wheat

  • Region: N/A
  • Days to Grow: 2

Wheat is unique in that it's a crop that you won't find anywhere in the world. Instead, you'll have to purchase Wheat Seeds from the Merchant.

Getting your hands on Wheat will unlock a few new decorations for your Homestead. It doesn't have too much use beyond that, so don't waste too much time growing it in quantity.
