A brand new Pokemon has been revealed for the upcoming Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. Wiglett might look like a regional Diglett variant, but that's apparently not the case; it simply looks a lot like its burrowing Kanto cousin. It's still cute, though.
Wiglett was first teased yesterday via the official World Pokemon Ecological Society website, where it could be seen in its natural habitat, hanging around on the beach. Earlier today, though, Nintendo unveiled a new official trailer starring Wiglett, showing off its worm-like form and clarifying its (lack of) relation to Diglett. You can check out that trailer right here.
According to Nintendo, Wiglett is a Water-type that lives and feeds in the ocean. It has an "exceptional sense of smell", and it's definitely not a cousin to Diglett; Nintendo says any resemblance to the Kanto mole Pokemon is "purely coincidental". As fans have pointed out, this is a concept known as "convergent evolution", in which two creatures (in this case, Pokemon) evolve separately to meet the needs of their respective environments and end up looking similar as a result. I'm not sure I buy it, but hey, I guess so.
Wiglett is just one of the new Pokemon making their way to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, which launches this November. Others that have been unveiled include the two banner legendaries, Koraidon and Miraidon, as well as starters Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly. Graffiti lemur Pokemon Grafaiai was also revealed to be making its debut in the game earlier this month, daubing trees with its distinctive pattern. Wiglett hasn't shown any comparable talents yet, but hey, there's plenty of time for it to do so.
You'll be able to grab Pokemon Scarlet and Violet on Nintendo Switch when they launch on November 18th. If you buy either of the games before February 28th, you'll get a special Pikachu that knows Fly and can Terastallize (one of the new mechanics in the game) into a Flying type.
