Circana (formerly The NPD Group) has released its sales data for December 2023, as well as a roundup of the best-selling games of 2023 (in the US, at least) on each platform.
As usual, the group's analysis was posted to X (formerly known as Twitter) by the ever-reliable Mat Piscatella, and Circana's findings probably won't surprise you if you've been keeping up with what's hot this year.
As you've probably already guessed given its excellent sales figures and UK chart dominance, Hogwarts Legacy was 2023's best-selling game across all platforms in the US, at least according to Circana.
Hogwarts Legacy takes the best-selling crown on PlayStation as well. It's in second place for 2023's Xbox chart, which is topped by the phenomenally popular Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III.
Warner Bros' wizarding RPG is even in fifth place on Switch, which isn't bad considering it didn't even launch for Nintendo's console until November. The Switch chart is topped by The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, because of course it is.
For December, Modern Warfare III also tops the all-format chart, and Fortnite was the most-played game on PlayStation and Xbox in December, ranked by monthly active users in the US.
Lethal Company tops the Steam most-played chart, although it's worth noting that Fortnite isn't available on Steam. Still, that's a pretty impressive achievement for Lethal Company, especially considering that Circana's list also contains Baldur's Gate 3 and Counter-Strike 2.
Hardware-wise, the PlayStation 5 pipped the Switch to the post in dollar and unit sales for December 2023. Presumably, the Xbox Series lineup is in third.
