EA has announced that the latest Battlefield 2042 season will be its last, and that production on the next entry in the series is ramping up, aided by Star Wars: Squadrons studio Motive.

In a post on its official website, EA says that after Season 7 of Battlefield 2042 is over, the game will still receive "new in-game challenges, events, modes, and of course, ongoing maintenance", but that major seasons will end.

The studio says it knows this news "may be disappointing" to fans, but that it was time to shift resources towards production on the next Battlefield game, which sounds like a pretty mighty endeavor.

Battlefield 2042 seasons will come to an end soon.

To that end, EA has announced that Motive, the developer behind Star Wars: Squadrons and last year's Dead Space remake, will be joining the suite of development teams currently working on the next Battlefield title.

Motive general manager Patrick Klaus says that Dead Space staffers Philippe Ducharme and Roman Campos-Oriola will be working on Battlefield, and that their "proven expertise in storytelling, immersive battles and developing on the Frostbite engine" makes them an ideal fit.

According to Klaus, Motive's work on Battlefield will continue "in parallel" to its work on the as-yet-untitled Iron Man game, for which we're yet to get a full reveal.

Klaus says that the development team on that game hit "a major internal milestone" this year, so hopefully, we'll get to learn more about that soon.

The next Battlefield game sounds like a pretty ambitious project. It will, according to EA, span "connected multiplayer experiences and single-player", and will be a co-development effort between Motive, DICE, Criterion, and Ripple Effect.

Battlefield general manager Byron Beede says he's looiking forward to the day that EA can reveal what the next Battlefield will entail, so it sounds like that day could be a little ways off yet.

Hopefully, the project will have a better start in life than Battlefield 2042, which launched to an extremely negative reception thanks to an abundance of bugs, missing features that fans thought should have been in the game from day one, and the lack of a single-player campaign.

If you want to check out Battlefield 2042 before EA consigns it to the graveyard of memory, you can pick it up right now on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.
