Project Aces, developers of the popular Ace Combat series, just launched the first of a series of extensive videos focusing on the franchise's lore.
The series, titled "Ace Combat Superweapon Official Commentary" does exactly what it says on the tin, discussing the iconic superweapons that have become a staple of most Ace Combat titles over the years.
The first video of the series focuses on Stonehenge, which plays a central role in Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies and appears in Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown (and also in Ace Combat Infinity, but we don't talk about that).
What makes the series even more interesting is that alongside Art Director Masato Kanno, the video features two actual military journalists, Nobuyoshi Noji from Ikaros Publications, editor-in-chief of Military Classics, and Isaku Okabe, who worked as a military consultant in anime like Ghost in the Shell, Yakitori: Soldiers of Misfortune, Yukikaze, and Mobile Suit Gundam 00.
The idea, which is really interesting, is to provide insight into the games' fictional weapons from the point of view of realism. This is certainly fitting for the Ace Combat series, which is well-known for its well-balanced mix of realism and military fiction.
You can watch it below. This is just video #1, which means that more will come focusing on the many superweapons that appeared in the series.
If you're unfamiliar with the series, the easiest way to try it out if with the latest game Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown, which is currently available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. If you so wish, you can purchase a copy on Amazon.
Having sold over 4 million units as of the end of 2022, it has revitalized the series after a long hiatus. We know that Project Aces is developing a new game in partnership with ILCA, but no details have been shared besides the fact that it's being developed in Unreal Engine 5.
Recently, we also saw the release of a new fan translation of the classic Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere.
