For many board game fans Steve Jackson Games' Munchkin is the go-to casual card game. A farcical fantasy experience where players take turns playing absurd cards to slay monsters and level up. Now, with the campaign for Munchkin Big Box going live on Backerkit, you have a chance to celebrate 25 years of its goofy legacy.

The Munchkin Big Box Backerkit Campaign

According to the campaign page, Munchkin Big Box is the biggest edition ever for the card game. It is still the same Munchkin experience boiled down to the best parts. Get in a dungeon, kill everything, betray your friends and steal their stuff, get out.

Looks like game night is solved for the next two years.

This affectionately titled "murderhobo" style of fantasy gaming is central to Munchkin's appeal. In fact, "Munchkinism" is shorthand for min/maxing players, those who go to absurd lengths to get the most destructive output out of a game's systems at the expense of everything else. No roleplaying; just combat.

Munchkin Big Box leans into this nostalgia with its box art. A parody mock-up of the classic TSR red box sets of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, all illustrated by the legendary John Kovalic (Dork Tower, Kobolds Ate My Baby).

As for what Munchkin Big Box contains, it is a mix of classic cards and more. The box will contain over 650 cards. This will include cards from the core set, Munchkin 2 – Unnatural Axe, Munchkin 3 – Clerical Errors, and Munchkin 6 – Double Dungeons, as well as many brand new cards, boards, dice, stickers, bookmarks, and standees.

Furthermore, the box itself is designed for storage. It can contain over 2000 cards, game boards, dice, and other accessories, which makes set up and clean up a breeze.

There is one major pledge level for Munchkin Big Box, which gets you the game for $125. There is a limited-time promo where the first 1,750 backers will get a colossal level die at no additional cost.

If you are missing certain expansions, the Backerkit campaign includes them as optional add-ons. These include core Munchkin expansions for $20 each, as well as spin-offs like Munchkin Cthulhu, Munchkin Zombies, and Star Munchkin, Munchkin Babies, and more. These expansions range in price from $6 to $35.

The Munchkin Big Box campaign went live today and has, at the time of writing, more than doubled its funding goal. It has raised $254,040 overtaking its initial funding goal of $75,000. The campaign will conclude on May 16.
