Today, Square Enix published a video conversation between Final Fantasy series brand manager Yoshinori Kitase and the creator of the series Hironobu Sakaguchi, focusing on the 35th anniversary of the franchise.
Kitase-san was asked about the possibility of a Final Fantasy VI Remake, and he mentioned that he can't think about it since the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy isn't finished. That being said, he admitted that there are many fans of the game working at Square Enix, and they ask him about it as well.
Both Kitase-san and Sakaguchi-san also mentioned that it would be very difficult to accomplish considering the nature of the game and its pixel art style.
Of course, this should not be considered a tease of things to come, as Kitase-san was quite clear in his wording that a remake is not in the cards for now. That being said, it's nice to know that we're not alone in wanting one.
For now, if you want to play Final Fantasy VI, you'll have to be content with the pixel remaster, which is available for PC, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and mobile.
You can watch the full livestream below, albeit it's in Japanese.
Kitase-san is currently working on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the second chapter of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, which will release in early 2024 for PS5 in two discs. We recently saw a new trailer.
Of course, Final Fantasy fans are eagerly waiting for Final Fantasy XVI, which is releasing in two days. Pre-load has just been made available on PS5 and, if you'd like to learn more, you can read my preview and enjoy our interview with Yoshida-san and art director Hiroshi Minagawa.
