Looking at all of the new titles announced for the PlayStation 5 but not in the position to buy a new console? Don't worry, because you may be able to get your hands on some of those exclusive games. Sony has announced that Spider-Man: Miles MoralesHorizon: Forbidden West, and Sackboy A Big Adventure will also be getting versions for the PS4.

In a post released on the PlayStation Blog just today, Jim Ryan, the President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, gave a post-PS5 Showcase summary of important details about the upcoming PlayStation 5 launch on November 12/19. Amidst the talk about the console's price as well as the two versions of the PlayStation 5, Jim mentioned that the company is aware that some customers will be transitioning from the PS4 to the PS5 at different times. That's why Spider-Man: Miles MoralesHorizon: Forbidden West, and Sackboy A Big Adventure are getting PS4 versions, as well. "While these three games were designed to take advantage of PS5 and its unique next-gen features like the ultra-high-speed SSD and DualSense controller, PS4 owners will also be able to enjoy these experiences when they launch," Jim said.

  • Spider-Man: Miles Morales takes place a year after Marvel's Spider-Man and has the titular webslinger defending his home of Harlem when a devious energy corporation and a high-tech criminal army clash.
  • Horizon: Forbidden West is the sequel to Horizon: Zero Dawn and continues Aloy's tale as she journeys west across a far-future, post-apocalyptic America.
  • Sackboy A Big Adventure is a platforming game that takes the LittleBigPlanet mascot on a whimsical journey through an arts and crafts world.

A change in opinion?

This is an interesting change of pace for Jim Ryan on generationial transitions. In an interview with gamesindustry.biz from late May, Jim Ryan said that having upcoming PS5 games on the PS4 was not something that was going to happen. He says:

We have always said that we believe in generations. We believe that when you go to all the trouble of creating a next-gen console, that it should include features and benefits that the previous generation does not include. And that, in our view, people should make games that can make the most of those features.

"We do believe in generations, and whether it's the DualSense controller, whether it's the 3D audio, whether it's the multiple ways that the SSD can be used... we are thinking that it is time to give the PlayStation community something new, something different, that can really only be enjoyed on PS5.

Whatever happened with Jim Ryan's opionion, those three games will release PS4 versions the same day as the PS5 ones. Those who buy a digital version can get a free upgrade on both versions of the PS5 while disc versions will get a free upgrade on the Ultra HD Blu-Ray disc drive version.
