Gearbox Software announced Risk of Rain 2 is officially live on consoles starting today. Fresh out of PAX West, they revealed the news at their Main Theater Show panel. The developer, Hopoo Games, made Risk of Rain 2 available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch for $29.99. Fans of the franchise can battle hordes of enemies with up to three friends while trying to escape the planet.
It released earlier this year on PC via Steam Early Access after a Gearbox Software panel at PAX East 2019. Hopoo still has a planned release for PC in Spring 2020 with a potential price increase.
Risk of Rain 2 Console Roadmap
The recent Scorched Acres June update that hit PC is also included in the launch version of each platform. The Scorched Acres include the latest survivor, Rex, a new stage, a new boss, and various other content. Hoopo provided a roadmap specifically for their console development, slightly different from the April 2019 roadmap. Both are clickable below to expand and read more easily for comparison.
Gearbox and Hopoo worked with PlayEveryWare to port Risk of Rain 2 to consoles and plan to continue working with them. PlayEveryWare will help with bringing each update to console platforms alongside PC. The new console roadmap showcases an update with new content planned for each upcoming season.
Quick Take
I immediately jumped on Risk of Rain 2 when it popped up on Steam Early Access and I think it's a great party game for the Switch. For the 26,000 people that reviewed it positively on Steam, we all know how short or long a run can be. Which makes it perfect for both short and long play sessions depending on the difficulty you choose. It should get some attention in the Fall when they add local wireless multiplayer to the Switch version.
Kudos to Hopoo Games for collaborating with other developers to make their game more accessible.
