Indie horror fishing game Dredge is getting a live-action movie adaptation, developer Black Salt Games has announced.
The movie will see Black Salt teaming up with production outfit Story Kitchen, which boasts luminaries like Sonic the Hedgehog producer Dan Jevons among its staff.
Per Variety, which in turn cites statements made by Black Salt and Story Kitchen, the Dredge movie's logline pitches it as "The Sixth Sense on the water". It'll mix the cosmic horror sensibilities of H.P. Lovecraft with the grounded storytelling of Ernest Hemingway.

Black Salt says it's excited to bring the world of Dredge into the live-action sphere, and that it's partnering with an "experienced" movie studio team in order to do so.
For its own part, Story Kitchen says Dredge is "captivatingly eerie and profoundly rich", and that the game had the Story Kitchen team "hooked from the very beginning".
Unfortunately, we don't know who's attached to "helm" (sorry) the Dredge movie, nor do we know who's starring in it yet. It's likely the movie is still fairly early on in production, so it could be a while before we learn more about it.

Dredge is, of course, far from the first video game to get the live-action movie treatment. The Sonic series, which is getting a third installment soon, is just one recent example, alongside other in-production projects like Death Stranding and the upcoming Zelda movie.
While Dredge's off-kilter gameplay and unusual setting might make it seem like a tough sell for a live-action project, the game has proven pretty popular among both critics and players alike, so there should be an audience for the movie, however unlikely it might seem.
No release date or window has been revealed for the Dredge movie yet; it's still early days, after all. Stay tuned for more on this rather odd but promising project.
