Avalanche and id Team Up for RAGE 2 in Spring 2019

RAGE 2 seemed the most unlikely. After all, how was Bethesda going to convince John Goodman to come back to games in 2018? Nevertheless, 2011's apocalyptic shooter is indeed getting a follow-up, and id Software isn't making it alone. I'll let Bethesda PR explain.

RAGE 2 packs a carnival of carnage so intense it can only come from two legendary AAA studios. That’s right, this is a f****ing AAAAAA game.

Not only are the current masters of DOOM behind the helm, but they're also enlisting help from the masters of explosions. You may know Avalanche Studios as creators of the Just Cause series or as the developers behind Mad Max. So, while this might be id's first real Open World rodeo, they're being guided by folks who know it well.

Looking at the brief gameplay trailer, you can already see the game forming. Unlike the original, RAGE 2 isn't a makeshift dungeon crawler. Players will be able to seek out battles in a vast environment, putting the original game's focus on driving to better use. It's possible there will still be some racing involved, but I imagine that you'll be more likely to run down mutated freaks than beat them to a checkered flag. The trailer also showcases building size mech suits, and you have to imagine that you'll be stomping around in them at some point.

Also returning from the original is the Wingstick, a combination machete-boomerang that decapitates foes with reckless abandon. This tool was one of the best parts of the first game, so I'm glad to see that its prominence has not diminished. Looking closely, it seems like this won't be your only tool for your left hand. The player's special Nanotrite abilities (think Bioshock's plasmids) will let them crush enemies from above or shift their guns into Overdrive.

RAGE 2 is set up to take center stage at Bethesda's upcoming E3 press conference. Breaking somewhat from their trend of rapid-fire releases, it will be Spring 2019 before we can start raiding Rage 2's wasteland on PC, Xbox One, and PS4. Considering the pedigree behind it, I'm sure it will be worth the wait.
