The BFG is a gun with a 30-year history that is beloved by gamer's everywhere and it's no surprise that it's coming to RAGE 2 as part of the Deluxe Edition and Collector's Edition. Unfortunately, it seems that the RAGE 2 BFG will only be available in the Deluxe Editon and Collector's Edition — at least on launch.
"Hey folks, I wanted to issue a correction about the BFG[,]" Bethesda Softworks Community Manager MortalEmperor began in a comment on the /r/RAGEgame subreddit. "[At] launch, the BFG will only be available as a premium item in the Deluxe and Collector's Editions."
The BFG traces its history all the way back to the original DOOM which was first released in 1993. Serving as the game's quintessential ultimate weapon, it could fire a massive blast of green energy that would heavily damage (if not outright eliminate) many demons caught within its generously-wide blast radius. The gun has since been a staple of the DOOM franchise and has occasionally made appearances in other media as a homage to one of the games that helped launch the first-person shooter genre. The RAGE 2 BFG will be one more such homage, although it seems that it's going to be paywalled behind the Deluxe Edition and Collector's Edition.
Exclusive items for pre-order bonuses or Deluxe Editions are an unfortunate reality in the world of gaming and it seems like RAGE 2 will be continuing the practice. There's also the possibility that this arrangement may fall afoul of a soon-to-be-introduced Senate bill that would seek to curtail loot boxes and pay-to-win microtransactions in games that children could play.
Thankfully, players may not be completely left out in the cold — note that the community manager qualified their statement with "at launch". There's the possibility of the RAGE 2 BFG releasing later in the game's life as a free update or as a purchasable piece of DLC. We'll have to wait and find out what happens! In the meantime, you can see the BFG in action in the RAGE 2 Pre-Order Trailer below.
