PUBG Corp has announced that map selection is due to arrive in PUBG. After being one of the most requested features from players, the option to choose from each of the soon to be three maps will be added after first coming to test servers. The news was revealed via an update on the game’s Steam Community page in which the team explained some of the reasons why it has taken so long to implement the feature.

They also put to rest any concerns that players might have over the new feature, specifically whether or not it would affect matchmaking times:

“For us, this was the most troubling issue, and it required a lot of discussion and serious research. We analyzed tens of millions of matches and sorted the data by server, mode, and time to make sure map selection wouldn’t break the game for anyone. We wanted to make sure that we could create a solution that worked for every region’s players, even the ones with a naturally low server population.”

The post goes on to address concerns regarding whether the map selector could account for players in different regions having different preferences and playstyles:

To solve this, we couldn’t just rely on one source of feedback (like Reddit). We gathered feedback from all around the world, and what we learned led us to scrap and rework our designs for map selection several times.

Ultimately, we created a version of map selection that we think is unlikely to cause issues for matchmaking. That said, we’ll still have to keep a close eye on it, since it could become problematic as new maps continue to be added.

PUBG Corp has given us a look at what the map selector might look like when it launches, in a screenshot you can view below:

No specifics were given as to when exactly players will be able to try out the new map selector, with the post merely saying that “work on the feature is almost complete, and we plan to release it soon after implementing it on the test server.”

The map selector is the latest in a number of new additions to PUBG, following the inclusion of timed event modes and the testing of a newer, much smaller map.
