Disclaimer: I met Jemma when filming a segment on HuffPoLive. We have kept in contact on Twitter.
Lately, I’ve been talking to Jemma Morgan one of the girls who stood up for GamerGate with me on HuffPoLive. We talk about her latest YouTube show, the reaction to HuffPo and her advice for women who want to move into gaming.
First up. So you’re doing a new YouTube show called “This Side Up” for stealthybox.com, what’s the show about?
This Side Up is an informal news show that deals with all things PlayStation. We film the show on Monday, Wednesday and Friday each week. I talk about what’s been going on in the news and give my input on gaming subjects that I feel like talking about.
How did you get involved with the project?
I was approached by StealthyBox.com after my interview on the Huffington Post. It sounded like an amazing opportunity, but it was nothing I had ever considered doing before, so I was really nervous. But I was looking for a new challenge and wanted to help contribute to a news site that had the same ideals as me.
Were you a fan of stealthybox.com before? What kind of content does it host?
“I hadn’t heard of them before. StealthyBox.com is a site dedicated to providing the reader with the latest news and reviews for PlayStation consoles. One thing that I’m grateful for is that alternative websites are starting to get the attention they deserve.”
What were the biggest challenges of taking on a show like this as an amateur?
I think for me it was gaining the confidence to get in front of a camera was really difficult. It’s getting easier every time I do a new show, and I have learned a lot about making a show that is suited to my style rather than trying to fit myself into a box. I also have a major gap in my gaming knowledge to overcome. Though I love games, I had really limited myself to only a certain MMO. So I’m almost rediscovering gaming again.
Do you think the PS4 is the best gaming platform out there currently? What is your favourite system of all time?
As I have only played the PS4, I am going to be very biased. We have some great games coming out next year for the system such as Uncharted 4, Bloodborne and The Order: 1886. It’s going to be an exciting 2015 for PS4 gamers I think. As for my favourite system of all time, I would have to say the Nintendo 64. I would spend hours playing Pokemon Stadium (I would often fall asleep on the sofa while playing it after school). It’s a system I hold dear to my heart.
You said you got picked up because of HuffPostLive. What was the reaction like from gamers after your appearance?
Really positive. People who were pro #GamerGate felt like we had finally been given a voice in the media. It felt amazing that I was able to make so many people proud. Though it was long ago in internet time, it’s still one of the only times we have been able to speak to the mainstream media. I had never expected fan art to be made of me, but everything I had seen has been very cool. I will always be grateful to the wonderful people who supported me after the HuffPost show.
Finally, the media makes it seem like it’s a dark time at the moment for women in gaming. What message would you give to women who want to get started?
You are the maker of your own destiny. People will always try to find some way to tear you down. There are doomsayers in every walk of life. Discover something you enjoy and don’t be afraid to go for it. The only person who can hold you back is yourself. I know this from first-hand experience. The best thing you can do to people who try to bring you down is to succeed and be happy.
We would like to thank Jemma for taking the time to talk to us.
Is Jemma right? Is the PS4 the best platform?
