What are 3D Platformer Games?

3D Platformers are platform games that can be divided into two categories: pseudo-3D or true 3D. Pseudo 3D platformers can have 3D gameplay (allowing you to traverse the Z axis, i.e. forward 'into' the screen and backward) and 2D graphics - these are known as isometic platformers. Alternatively, they can have 3D graphics and 2D gameplay - these are called 2.5D. True 3D platformers have both 3D gameplay and graphics and a dynamic camera.

They might allow the player to rotate the camera independent of the character to view the environment from arbitrary angles. Early 3D platformers like Super Mario 64, Donkey Kong 64, Banjo-Kazooie, and Spyro the Dragon remain popular platforming series to this day.
