The fine folks behind The Escapists franchise have a new game on the way. Team17 is employing their same classic pixel art style for their brand-new survival game that's aptly titled The Survivalists.
Set in the universe of The Escapists, The Survivalists is exactly what it says on the tin — a game that's all about surviving. I mean, I suppose a game set in a prison is also about surviving, but this is more "built a hut on an island" and less "don't get shanked in the shower". Check out the reveal trailer to get a feel for the game,
The Survivalists features all of the things you would expect to see from such a game: gathering resources, crafting, and building stuff. It also has some delightfully silly things like the ability to train monkeys. From what we can see in the trailer, you can teach them a lot more than just some adorable tricks — do things right, and you'll have them helping you gather up the valuable items that you need to survive. (I would, however, remind anyone who gives a monkey an axe to rewatch Planet of the Apes and remember how that worked out for us the last time.)
Here are some of the highlights of the game according to a press release Team17 sent out after the Nintendo Indie World stream:
- A day/night cycle
- A "broad range" of animals, including:
- Boars
- Big cats
- Sharks
- and, of course, Monkeys
- Deadly fanatics skilled in combat
- A "mimic system" that lets you train monkeys
- Crafting system which lets you make objects, weapons, and more
When Can You Play The Survivalists?
If you're a survival game nut like me, you're already sold on The Survivalists. There's one big question left: when can you get this game, and on which platforms?
According to Team17's press release, their latest game will be coming to the PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch sometime in 2020. Nintendo Switch owners will have their choice of either a digital or physical version of the game.
You can find out more about The Survivalists at the game's official website.
