Bandai Namco really loves to release DLC for games way past their prime, and now it's One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4's turn to get some.
The publisher has announced that the game, which was originally launched in 2020, will get three new DLC character packs for a total of nine new characters.
Each character will have their own announcement, and today we learn that Gear 5 Luffy will be the first new character released in September. Pre-purchases will be available tomorrow, July 24.
While the following 8 characters have not been officially revealed, two have been teased with silhouettes. The first character of the 5th pack appears to be Uta, while the first of the 6th pack seems to be Gol D. Roger.
The release of new DLC for a game that is over three years old shouldn't be too surprising considering the precedents with Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 and Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions. The One Piece: Pirate Warriors series has shipped 8 million copies cumulatively worldwide, so there certainly is plenty of room for milking.
If you're unfamiliar with One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4, it was released in 2020 for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. You can read our review, in which our Andrew Stretch defined it as "a fun way to kill some time and become King of the Pirates."
In the meanwhile, Bandai Namco moved the series to the JRPG genre with One Piece Odyssey, which recently got its own DLC.
