During the last day of Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest in Las Vegas, the development team revealed the first fish that will appear in the new expansion "Dawntrail."
The reveal was made by English localization lead Kate Cwynar during the dedicated panel. It's a fish living in a lake among the heights of the new area named Urqopacha. We also learn that according to the local legends, the lake was originally part of the sea (hinting at possible saltwater).
The fish looks like the image we see below. Keep in mind that this isn't yet art from the game, but a picture by Twitter user Kat Turk portraying the reconstruction of a Sacabambaspis at the Natural History Museum of Helsinki. The Sacabambaspis is a prehistoric fish from the Ordovician period and that specific picture happened to go viral last year.
The audience at Fanfest was asked to provide a few facts about the fish by popular acclamation. Its name is going to be "All Right, All Right, All Right" (but its popular nickname is going to be "Derpswimmer") it only swims toward the left, and it's the top of its food chain. This is actually rather funny considering that the original Sacabambaspis had no jaw.
Final Fantasy XIV is available now for PC, PS5, and PS4, while an Xbox Series X|S version has just been announced this week and will enter open beta relatively soon with a release window in spring 2024. Players in open beta will be able to play on the live servers with everyone else as it happened years ago with the PS5 versions.
The Dawntrail expansion will be released in Summer 2024 and we already heard a lot of details and saw plenty of screenshots. While we wait, yesterday Square Enix shared plenty of information about the upcoming update, numbered 6.5.
