During a panel at GDC 2024, Epic Games officially announced that the Epic Games Store is coming to iOS and Android by the end of this year.
Epic Games Store general manager Steve Allison mentioned that while the battle against "gatekeepers" in the mobile space is not over, Epic has made enough progress to make this announcement.
The store on mobile will include Fortnite and "a selection of third-party partners" and the developer boasts that the EGS will be the first-ever game-focused, multiplatform store that will work across Android, iOS, PC, and Mac.
The Epic Games Store on mobile will feature the same 88/12 revenue share with developers, 0% Unreal Engine royalties on sales processed by Epic, Epic First Run and Now on Epic programs, and Epic Rewards as on PC.
This follows Epic's success in forcing Apple to re-enable its developer account at least in the European Union.
During the conference, a limitation of the service to the EU was not mentioned, but we reached out to Epic to hear whether the store will be available only in the Old Continent on iOS or both mobile platforms. We'll update this post if we hear anything of note.
Epic also claimed that at the end of 2023, the EGS had over 270 million accounts on PC, over 75 million monthly active universe, and $950 million spent by players.
Thanks to its Free Games program, players received 80 games worth over $2,000 during the year.
While we know that the mobile store will arrive before the end of the year, a specific release date was not announced just yet. All we know is that Epic is "hard at work" to implement it.
Incidentally, during the same event we saw the reveal of Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, with Amy Hennig of Uncharted fame at the helm.
