In a strange coincidence, the Boomerang Nebula -- also known as the coldest spot in space -- just so happens to look an awful lot like an Among Us crewmate.

Among Us is well-known for its viral marketing, whether it's the ability to wear Geoff Keighley's face or a one-shot manga in Japan. There's plenty of great content on the way this year, but the world of Among Us just got a little weirder after a picture of the Boomerang Nebula was posted online by the National Radio Astronomy Observatory.

The Boomerang Nebula Looks Like an Among Us Crewmate Among the Stars

A recent picture from the National Radio Astronomy Observatory was released late last week showing the Boomerang Nebula (seen above). Amazingly, it also happens to look like an Among Us crewmate. It seems that even the cosmos has a sense of humor.

The photo of the Boomerang Nebula (originally taken in 2017) is the combined work of the Hubble Telescope and ALMA, the Atacama Large Millimeter Array. It's believed to be a protoplanetary nebula -- a relatively young object in space, as far as these things go. A star sits at the center of the nebula, pushing out gas and providing the light captured by millions of dollars of high-tech equipment, ultimately boiling down to what looks like an Among Us crewmate.

Comparisons to video game characters aside, the Boomerang Nebula is famous in its own right. The gas flowing out from the late-stage star in its center is also dropping the temperature in the region, making this nebula the coldest area in space known to humanity: it currently sits as just 1 Kelvin. That's -272.15 Celsius or -457.87 Fahrenheit -- a temperature almost cold enough to get your dad to turn up the thermostat.

Sadly, the silly image we see today is but one interpretation of what it can look like; in this particular case, the orange gas that looks like an Among Us crewmate is the molecular gas being ejected by a star that gives this nebula its ice-cold temperature. You can send some of your fellow Crewmates to join it in space by buying Among Us on PC, consoles, and mobile devices for $4.99 or your regional equivalent.
