An Among Us BT21 collaboration has been announced, bringing together the popular game and the BT21 brand created by Line Friends in collaboration with BTS, one of the world's most popular Kpop bands.

You're probably familiar with Among Us by now; the game most recently launched a substantial update earlier this month. Earlier today, it announced a collaboration with BT21, a brand created by Line Friends in collaboration with the popular all-male Kpop group BTS. Strap in and we'll explain just what the heck all of this means.

The Among US BT21 Collaboration, BTS, and Line Friends Explained

The Among Us BT21 collaboration is going to require a fair bit of explaining. This matryoshka doll of merchandising has a lot of layers to unroll, so let's get right to it.

As you probably know, Among Us is one of the world's most popular social deduction games. It blew up a couple of years ago after Twitch streamers started picking it up, ultimately resulting in the cancellation of a planned sequel in favor of fleshing out the original game back in 2020.

Follow so far? Great, because it's about to get a lot more complex. This collaboration centers around BT21, a project of Line Friends -- a business that seeks to create interesting content for the social media app Line (among other merch). Line is one of the most popular such services in Asia, and BT21 was created in collaboration with a Kpop group called BTS.

BTS is an all-male Kpop (Korean pop music) band that was formed in 2013. It's proven to be an immensely popular act -- BTS has won so many awards that the list of accolades warranted getting its own Wikipedia page. In short, it's one of the most popular South Korean music groups in the world.

There's your explanation, so... what exactly is the Among Us BT21 collaboration? Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it's going to be anything in the game itself -- note the disclaimer in the tweet announcing the crossover:

*These collaboration characters are not [in-game].

No announcement as to what the heck this actually is has been made as of yet. One of the ways Line manages to monetize its service is through the sale of "stickers" -- static or animated emoji which can be purchased for your account and used in conversations with your friends, and this collaboration will probably result in some stickers being sold at the minimum. There's a possibility for other merch, too; the first wave of Line Friends characters have been slapped onto all kinds of merchandise.

So, will the BT21 characters actually come to Among Us? Innersloth has announced the first-ever in-game partnership just last week; while nothing has been confirmed just yet, I wouldn't be surprised to see this Among US BT21 crossover result in some kind of in-game content at a future date.

Correction (November 17, 2021) - The article was corrected due to a misapprehension in regards to the participation of Kpop band BTS due to their involvement with the creation of BT21.
