NetherRealm Studios put out a new trailer for Mortal Kombat 11 during Sony’s State of Play stream on March 25th. In it, Liu Kang, Kung Lao, and Jax are all revealed to be playable additions to the roster. All three previously appeared in NetherRealm’s Mortal Kombat X, and thus their reveal comes as no big surprise. Sony closed their first State of Play show with the trailer, and promised that “more information would be coming soon.” With Mortal Kombat 11 releasing in a little under a month, we’ll be seeing more from them soon.

NetherRealm’s latest trailer also revealed some new designs for characters Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, and more. Backed by Ice Cube’s “Check Yo Self,” these classic characters face off against past versions of themselves in some tense situations. As explained further in a post on the PlayStation Blog, with the resurgent popularity of Mortal Kombat, NetherRealm figured they could honor the past designs and legacy of the series. Not all characters will face off against images of themselves from the early 1990s, and some are in for a surprise. As an example, the cocksure Johnny Cage from the 90s is a young brash Hollywood star, compared to the more reasoned attitude Johnny Cage has today.

Still, the developer is in no rush to abandon the series’ roots. The newfound humor and violence are on full display here. The storyline has only gotten more and more convoluted as Mortal Kombat hits its eleventh full release. Presumably, the “classic” characters will be available as skins during local and online play, but there’s been no word yet on skin plans. NetherRealm has also been steadily bolstering the character roster for Mortal Kombat 11, only this past weekend revealing Shang Tsung and Noob Saibot. We may well have some more surprises in store before Mortal Kombat 11 releases on April 23rd.
