After the controversial news that the highly anticipated remake of the classic Playstation Final Fantasy VII wouldn't be released as one entity, but rather a multi-part series, Square-Enix game director Yoshinori Kitase has divulged a little more about the remake.

In a blog post on the official Square-Enix website, Kitase states that the remake will go "beyond the scale and depth" of the original, saying that they plan on expanding on both the world and the story in addition to a new gameplay experience. Kitase wants to underline just how big the scale of the planned remake will be, saying once again that the scope and density of the project simply wouldn't work as one game.

Even though people were quite unhappy when the announcement of the series was quietly sent out in a press release after the gameplay trailer shown at the Playstation Experience, it seems like the developer is being genuine in their desire to expand heavily on the source material. Kitase says that simply remaking the game scene by scene would mean that they have to cut out content to create a condensed version of Final Fantasy VII. Square-Enix remains dedicated to making the remake into something that feels familiar, yet fresh at the same time.

Quick Take

I know it's easy to get angry over this, and to a certain point I'd say that you're justified. The original came on more than disc, but at least it came out at the same time. It's also very easy to call it a cash grab. While I'm sure the prospect of milking more money out of the franchise was definitely a part of their decision, it feels to me like they also want to take this opportunity to expand on the game's story and world without wanting fans to wait for too long. I get the feeling it's not as bad as everyone says it is.

I've been playing games since I was just barely able to walk so I might as well write about them.
