With Final Fantasy XVI and Final Fantasy XIV sharing the same producer and many developers, it's certainly not farfetched to expect a crossover between the two at some point.
Today FFXVI producer and FFXIV producer and director Naoki Yoshida took to the MMORPG's official Twitter account to tease the possibility "once things settle down."
Producer & Director of #FFXIV Naoki Yoshida here.
Congrats on the launch of the latest FINAL FANTASY! Once things settle down, we should chat about a collab.
I recommend giving #FF16 a try, Warriors of Light! It's our newest FF title, at least until our next patch launches!
Funnily, the Tweet echoes a running gag started at PAX East, when FFXIV producer and Director Yoshida-san joked about having to discuss with himself (FFXVI producer Yoshida-san) about the possibility of a collaboration. When I interviewed him (or both of them?) in late April, he told me that discussion still had to happen.
Hopefully, after the team gets some much-deserved rest, Yoshida-san will find the time to knock on Yoshida-san's door and have a nice chat.
Final Fantasy XVI is currently available exclusively for PS5 and you can read our enthusiastic review in which our Andrew Stretch defined the game as "everything he could have hoped for and more" and "a deep story and fully fleshed out world that you'll want to be protecting."
A PC version has also been confirmed by Yoshida-san himself, but Square Enix will need time to optimize the game for the platform, so we don't yet know when it'll launch.
Final Fantasy XIV is currently available for PC, PS5, and PS4. After its fourth expansion "Endwalker," the game currently counts 27 million registered accounts worldwide. The successful MMORPG has recently received the major 6.4 update "The Dark Throne," while new details about its next expansion are expected for the North American fanfest in July.
