The world of Poppy Playtime just got a lot busier. Poppy Playtime Chapter 2 has been released, and to mark the occasion, developer Mob Games is offering the first chapter for free on Steam. The devs have also addressed the game's NFT controversy and made a rather interesting pledge.

What's going on with Poppy Playtime right now?

After the first episode of the horror adventure game Poppy Playtime was released in October last year, the devs then began teasing Poppy Playtime Chapter 2 on Twitter in February. Now, Chapter 2 has been released, and you can grab it on Steam for $9.99. If you want to get into this creepy series, now's a good time, as Mob Games has also announced it's giving away the first episode of Poppy Playtime for free "forever". This is a similar strategy to other episodic games like Telltale's offerings; give away the first ep for free and get people hooked before you charge them for the rest.

As well as these developments, Mob Games also issued a statement regarding the controversial creation of NFTs related to Poppy Playtime, which caused a significant review backlash for the game at the time. Speaking on Twitter, Mob CEO Zach Belanger said he and the team "regret" making NFTs for the game and also the way in which the studio tied game lore to those NFTs. Belanger also says that although the company won't be making any more NFTs, the contract involving the original collection is legally binding, so that collection can't be removed. However, Mob Games will be donating all of its NFT money to the Clean Air Task Force, a clean air advocacy group that seeks to lower air pollution levels.

What is Poppy Playtime?

If you're unfamiliar with the world of Poppy Playtime, it's a sort of creepypasta-inspired horror adventure game along the lines of Five Nights at Freddy's or Bendy and the Ink Machine. After Cawthon retired in 2021, other games were bound to spring up to fill the void, and that's exactly what Poppy Playtime is. It takes place in an abandoned toy factory and involves manipulating objects for physics puzzles, as well as fleeing from murderous toys. Like FNAFPoppy Playtime also has a dedicated fan following, with players combing the game and its ancillary media for lore and backstory.

According to Mob Studios, Poppy Playtime Chapter 2 is three times the size of the first chapter.

You can download Poppy Playtime Chapter 1 on Steam right now, and it won't cost you a penny. The second chapter will set you back $9.99 and can also be picked up on Steam. Right now, we don't have any idea how many more chapters there will be for the game, nor do we know when they'll be launching. Here's hoping this isn't a Half-Life 2: Episode Three situation (Half-Life: Alyx notwithstanding, of course). We'll bring you more on this as soon as we get it, as ever.
