Sean "Day9" Plott took to the stage to open up the PC Gaming Show. After an intro that celebrated the dedication of the PC gaming community, we got our first look at an expansion for XCOM 2. Titled XCOM 2: War of the Chosen, it opened with strange purple creatures with white hair appeared on screen as talk of "the resistance" was interspersed with human characters fighting off what appeared to be zombie-like aliens reminiscent of the Clots from Killing Floor. Here's the trailer that was shown during the presentation:
This expansion was stated to be "easily" twice the size of the previous expansion. The purple-skinned aliens are called "the Chosen" and were designed to be the ultimate adversaries for XCOM. The Chosen get stronger over the course the game, learning new skills & abilities as the game progresses. There are three types of Chosen, each with their own distinct fighting style - for example, a female Chosen takes on the role of an Assassin-type character with a mix of stealth and close-quarters combat. The Hunter-type Chosen is a long-range sniper, and the Warlock-type Chosen is ... well, a warlock, so it's likely to be a spellcaster of some type.
In addition to the Chosen, there are three types of characters in the Resistance who you can recruit. The Reapers are the most powerful soldiers ever created, The Skirmishers are the most mysterious, and the Templar are psionics who build up their power over several turns.
In XCOM 2: War of the Chosen, the "Lost" (the zombie-like characters) are large swarms of mutated humans who were badly affected by an alien invasion that took place 20 years prior. A horde of Lost can enter into the middle of combat and make things much more tactically difficult; they're almost like a force of nature that you might have to deal with.
XCOM 2: War of the Chosen will come out August 29, 2017 on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.
