Today Blizzard Entertainment premiered a new Overwatch 2 animated short titled Genesis Part One: Dawn.
If you're familiar with Blizzard's animation, you know that the developer's animated shorts are always top-notch. While this is no exception, the style is certainly different compared to what we've seen before. Instead of 3D CGI, we get a style closer to Japanese anime.
The short basically tells the tale of the beginning of the Overwatch story, and I would lie if it doesn't look like a cautionary tale about the current acceleration of artificial intelligence.
We hear the story of Dr. Mina Liao and how she created the next generation of Omnics. We also see how some had doubts about her work and its purpose, while others straight-up opposed it while society embraced it. As the title indicates, this is part one of three, so you can expect more shorts coming down the line, continuing the story and providing a look into the origins of the franchise for those who aren't familiar with the lore.
We already know that part 2, titled "Innocence," will premiere in a week on Thursday, July 13, at 9:00 a.m. PDT. I imagine part 3 will come the following week, likely on July 20.
Overwatch 2, which is currently in its season 5, is available for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. It's free-to-play, so you can try it out without a purchase, but, of course, it has plenty of optional microtransactions to draw revenue from.
Incidentally, a few weeks ago Blizzard Entertainment has revealed the roadmap including season 7 and beyond, so we already have a partial idea of what further seasons will entail. Season 6 will bring some story content, which was detailed in a recent video.
