Today Blizzard has announced the roadmap for the upcoming season of Overwatch 2, but there's bad news for those eagerly awaiting the promised PvE mode.

The mode as it was announced a while ago, with a dedicated hero experience including talent trees and long-term power progression has been scrapped, with Executive Producer Jared Neuss explaining that some exciting content had been developed, but the was "no end in sight" for when the whole mode could be released.

On the other hand, a sort of PvE experience will be released gradually with co-op story missions starting with Season 6, as the developers have decided to focus on the live service aspect of the game to continue delivering content with a regular cadence.

According to Game Director Aaron Keller, a major story-based event will kick off a new story arc for Overwatch 2, and more co-op missions are planned, some canon, and some definitely not canon.

Below you can check out the full roadmap, with Season 6 being the biggest released so far also including a new permanent game mode and a new support hero. A new tank hero will come in Season 7.

New story features are also coming, including a lore database that players can unlock over time, on top of single-player versions of some of the co-op content mentioned above, albeit the way it's described feels pretty much like a score attack mode.

Overwatch 2 Season Roadmap

Below you can watch the full livestream and hear the news and details directly from the developers.

Overwatch 2, which is currently in its season 4, is currently available for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. It's free-to-play, so you can try it out without a purchase, but, of course, it has plenty of optional microtransactions.

In case you're not familiar with the game, it's the successor of the original hero first-person shooter Overwatch, which was active between 2016 and 2022. It features a sci-fi story set in a future version of Earth where humanity and the robotic Omics are struggling for dominance and survival, while the titular reformed international task force Overwatch attempts to maintain order as terrorists organization raise and corporate conflicts ensue.
