With a new Ghostbusters movie on the way, its no surprise that someone is capitalizing on this and releasing a game tie-in. Activision has announced it will be publishing a pair of Ghostbusters video games.
One game, simply titled Ghostbusters, will be coming to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on July 12th. The game is described as a "third person action role-playing game" and will feature four completely new characters. The game will take place after the movie, with the four rookies tasked with watching over the famous firehouse and New York City while the new squad goes touring around the world. The game appears to be a twin stick shooter, and will allow you to upgrade your skills, find collectibles, and features four player local co-op. While Activision will be publishing the game, no developer has been specified.
Consoles and PC aren't the only place getting a Ghostbusters game, as Activision has also announced a second game for iOS/Android/Kindle devices. This game, called Ghostbusters: Slime City, will have you playing as a single Ghostbuster in New York. Your goal will be to battle and collect ghosts, collect crafting materials to upgrade your weapons and headquarters, and team up with other players in asynchronous co-op. This game will also be coming out in July, but there's no set release date yet. Similar to Ghostbusters there's also no current developer specified.
This isn't the franchise's first run in video games. 1984 saw the first Ghostbusters video game, also titled Ghostbusters, release on a variety of consoles. The NES version of the game was rather infamous thanks to its boring gameplay, extreme difficulty, and hilarious ending message that included many misspellings and grammatical errors. More recently, in 2009, Ghostbusters: The Video Game was released. This third person shooter featured the voices and likeness of the original movie cast, and a new plot that follows the events of the second movie. Many fans tend to consider Ghostbusters: The Video Game to be Ghostbusters 3. Its 2011 follow-up, a twin stick shooter called Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime, was rather poorly received and is mostly forgotten.
