Devolver Digital has released its financial statement for the 2023 fiscal year, and the report contains news of a Human Fall Flat 2 delay, as well as a somewhat gloomy portrait of the company's sales as a whole in 2023.
In a press release, Devolver says that Human Fall Flat 2 will no longer be part of its 2025 catalog and will instead "set [the studio] up for an even stronger 2026" after returning to growth in 2024 and 2025.
The game was originally announced during last year's Devolver Direct presentation, which the company decided to host instead of attending E3 that year (in a decision that proved rather prophetic in the long run).
News of Human Fall Flat 2's delay comes amid a rather gloomy 2023 report for Devolver, with the studio announcing a 31% revenue drop compared to 2022.
Similarly, Devolver's adjusted gross profit figure fell 42%, although the company says it experienced "strong recovery" in the second half of the year when compared to the first half.
Devolver describes 2023 as a "rebuild" year, with a return to growth expected in 2024 thanks to a healthy release schedule. Said schedule contains recent releases like Pepper Grinder and Children of the Sun, as well as upcoming titles like Anger Foot and Baby Steps.
According to Devolver's financial report, the studio also "declined certain subscription deal offers" that it says "undervalued the proposed games' value and revenue opportunity" for both 2023 and 2024.
This decision came, Devolver says, after "a strong period of growth for subscription deals in 2021 and 2022", suggesting that a studio having its games on Game Pass or PlayStation Plus isn't being seen as the golden opportunity it may once have represented.
That being said, Devolver does say that subscription deals "remain a part of [its] long-term growth strategy", so you won't stop seeing Devolver games on major subscription platforms anytime soon.
