Devolver Digital Won't Be At E3 2023, Studio Confirms

Legendary indie studio Devolver Digital won't be at E3 this year, choosing instead to throw its pixelated hat into the Summer Game Fest ring.

Devolver Digital has revealed that it won't be at E3 2023 this year. The studio, which is known for its tongue-in-cheek presentations and its indie-spirited Parking Lot, has instead decided to host its own presentation during Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest, which is also scheduled to take place in June.

This news comes to us via the official Devolver Twitter account, where the studio says there will be "no Devolver E3 Parking Lot this year". This is presumably a reference to Devolver's tradition of hosting a sort of indie picnic-style gathering in a parking lot near to E3, but it also confirms that Devolver won't host any kind of presentation during this year's E3 either.

Instead, Devolver says it'll be holding a "fresh, new Devolver Direct presentation" during Summer Game Fest 2023, which is due to kick off on June 8th. We'll likely get to see looks at upcoming and yet-to-be-announced Devolver games there, so if you want to know more about upcoming Devolver projects, E3 ain't the place to be.

The last E3 with which Devolver was directly associated was 2019's presentation, which was characteristically bonkers. After E3 2020 was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, E3 2021 took place entirely online, but Devolver chose to host its own "MaxPass+" event as part of Summer Game Fest instead. Of course, E3 2022 was subsequently canceled as well.

Last year, E3 announced that it would be returning in 2023 "with both a digital and an in-person event". However, Ubisoft has announced that it definitely won't be attending the show this year, choosing instead to host its own live show in LA around the time of E3. Xbox, Nintendo, and Sony also won't be at the event, along with Sega and Tencent, leading to serious doubts about E3 2023's future.

It seems that many companies are opting for their own curated events, or choosing to throw in their lot with Summer Game Fest, rather than commit to E3. Whatever happens to E3 2023, one thing's for sure: Devolver Digital won't be there, and their anarchic presence will be sorely missed.
