Cities: Skylines 2 developer Colossal Order has provided an update on the game's long-awaited modding feature, and it sounds like it's still going to be a while before full modding support arrives.

In a new Word of the Week column released today, Colossal Order admits that there is "still a lot of work...to be done" on the asset editing element of the game's modding feature, which "is not in a shape or form" to be used in its current state.

Asset importing is critical to releasing the Region Packs teased in last year's roadmap, and it's also crucial for making sure players can create their own assets rather than simply using what's already in the game.

Asset editing for Cities: Skylines 2 could take a while to arrive.

Unfortunately, the new Word of the Week column doesn't provide any kind of updated timeline regarding when we can expect modding support to arrive in Cities: Skylines 2.

Colossal Order does, however, say that it's currently "preparing for the public release" of modding support for Code Modding and a Map Editor feature. The studio has already announced that modding features will roll out gradually rather than being available all at once.

The studio also praises its community for its ingenuity; Colossal Order says it's stopped trying to guess what players will come up with due to how many times it's been surprised, choosing instead to "just ask directly how to support those efforts".

In short, it looks like full modding support might still be a ways off for Cities: Skylines 2, but Code Modding and the Map Editor should be along in public beta sooner rather than later.

If you're not familiar with Cities: Skylines 2, it's the followup to the popular Cities: Skylines

The game launched in October last year to a somewhat ambivalent reception, with developer Colossal Order pledging to keep players updated weekly regarding progress on updates and fixes.

Several updates have been released for Cities: Skylines 2 already, although we're still no closer to finding out when the game will land on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S after being delayed last year.

Despite its rocky launch, Cities: Skylines 2 has been a commercial success for Colossal Order, selling more than a million copies at last count.

You can grab Cities: Skylines 2 right now for PC, and it's also available as part of a PC Game Pass subscription.
