Colossal Order has announced what it calls an "important decision" regarding the rollout of Cities: Skylines 2 modding.
Previously, Colossal Order has discussed being hard at work on the Cities: Skylines 2 editor, and that's still the case, but the studio has now decided that modding features won't all be made available at once.
Instead, according to the latest Word of the Week column, modding support "will roll out gradually as the features enter beta", so creators will get to test them bit by bit.
In practical terms, this means that mod creators will gain access to modding tools "as soon as the code modding and Paradox Mods are ready for testing".
Following this, public betas for both features will become available, with Map and Asset editing remaining under construction, so to speak, "as they require a bit more attention still".
The Asset editing feature is, according to Colossal Order, "suffering from technical issues", and while fixes are being planned, "it might take months in the worst case".
On the whole, Colossal Order says it's looking to get out of the beta stage for mod support "during the Finnish fall", so it might take a little while before you can start working on your Cities: Skylines 2 mods in earnest.
In the Word of the Week column, Colossal Order also shares more information on the progress of Cities: Skylines 2's console versions.
The studio says work on these ports is "ongoing" and is "gated by the modding support", but that progress is being made. No release window is available yet, however, because there are "too many unknowns".
Another patch is also on the way, and it'll include fixes for abandoned dogs and stuck vehicles, as well as pollution properly affecting land value.
Cities: Skylines 2 is currently available for PC. It's also on the way for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Stay tuned for more info.
