Paradox and Colossal Order have released a new Cities: Skylines 2 Word of the Week column containing updates on what the devs are up to, and this time, it's all about modding.
In the new Word of the Week post, Colossal Order CEO Mariina Hallikainen says she's "astonished" by the effort players have put into finding Cities: Skylines 2's "unfinished version of the Editor" and using it to create mods.
However, she says that you should approach modding with "caution"; using the unfinished Editor may result in your maps breaking, since more changes are coming to the feature soon.
Hallikainen is quick to clarify that her warning is not intended to discourage players from working on mods, but "rather to try and openly share what to expect".
In essence, if you're making mods for Cities: Skylines 2, just be aware that they may be ephemeral due to the fact that the Editor technically hasn't been released yet.
The game's Editor is scheduled to be released "early next year", according to Hallikainen and Colossal Order, but as was the case in an Editor update shared earlier this month, there's still no concrete release timeline.
Colossal Order is also inviting modders to join an Early Access preview of the Editor, scheduled to go live "a few weeks before its release".
If you sign up, you'll be able to test out your mods, share feedback with the devs, and feel your way around the Editor before it gets a full launch.
Finally, Hallikainen provides an update on the performance improvements discussed in last week's Word of the Week diary.
She says that the cost of rendering geometry is being reduces, and bug fixing is also "going forward nicely".
According to Hallikainen, a bigger patch is due sometime in December before the team goes on a break for the holidays in three weeks' time. Naturally, you shouldn't expect patches during that break.
Cities: Skylines 2 is available right now for PC. The game is also coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S sometime in spring next year.
