The Astroneer Holiday Update is here and it's bringing some Christmas cheer to space!

Astroneer is a game that's all about heading to another solar system and uncovering a grand mystery while also building out a pretty neat base. Players can dig up resources in fully destructible terrain, build up a base that will help them produce various useful goods, and even fly to other planets in the solar system!

Now, "Project CHEER" is here and Exo Dynamics needs your help in recovering wayward experiments! As noted in a news post on the game's Steam Community page, players can build the new EXO Request Platform which can be used to send recovered Project CHEER packages back to EXO Dynamics for the cost of 2 Resin at a Medium Printer.

Each recovered package will grant players "recovery points" which can then be traded in for various festive cosmetics. These include:

  • Frosty Visor - 400 Recovery Points
  • Frost Palette - 2,500 Recovery Points
  • Frosty Mask - 2,500 Recovery Points
  • Holiday Top Hat - Awarded to all players after the community reaches 100,000,000 Recovery Points as a whole

The inclusion of hats and masks are a surprising addition to longtime players. The community has long requested cosmetics of this type, and these are the first additions that are making their way into the game. More details about these new cosmetics will be coming in the future.

System Era Softworks Gives Back with the Astroneer Holiday Update

In addition to the cosmetic goodies introduced in the Astroneer Holiday Update, System Era Softworks has patched out a bunch of bugs; you can see these in the full news post on the game's Steam Community page. The company will be giving back to the community via this in-game event.

System Era will be running an Extra Life campaign supporting Seattle Children's Hospital. For every 50,000,000 Recovery Points achieved by the playerbase during this limited-time event, they will donate $5,000 to the campaign up to a total of $20,000. You can chip in yourself by joining their team here.

Astroneer is one of my favorite games in recent memory and this is a pretty neat update. If you don't yet already own the game, you can get it for PC via Steam or the Humble Store at a price of $29.99 or your regional equivalent. Console players can pick it up for the Xbox One at the Microsoft Store and the PlayStation 4 at the PlayStation Store for the same price.
