Prepare to lock up your wallet and remove your card details from your Steam account as the Steam Autumn Sale has begun. This Steam sale is special though as it is also Steams way of announcing to players that they are going to be having their own Steam Awards but the categories might not be what you expect. The Steam Autumn sale began yesterday with 13,628 titles going on sale where they will remain until the 29th of November.

Some great titles such as The Witcher 3: Wild HuntMetal Gear Solid V, and Far Cry 4 have been discounted. It isn’t just AAA titles either as smaller hits such as Rocket League, Undertale, and plenty of other indie titles are also up on sale. Now’s the time to check your wishlist and see whether anything you’ve been looking at is currently being discounted.

The Steam Awards have also been announced for December, instead of picking which games are nominated for each category Steam is instead allowing users to pick who should be nominated for each of their 8 categories.

For the first time in human history, our Steam Community will decide the nominees for the prestigious Steam Awards. This November you will get to choose nominees for 8 different categories as well as have the opportunity to create your very own award category.

Don’t expect their categories to be the usual ones that you see such as “Best RPG” or “Best Sport Title” though as you’re able to nominate games for categories such as the “Test Of Time” award or, the “I’m Not Crying, There’s Something In My Eye” award and even a “We Didn’t Think Of Everything”. The final category will actually have the Steam Awards Selection Committee read submitted entries for categories and nominees and replace this placeholder with a ‘real’ category and reward a game for its achievements in that field. Here’s a full list of the awards:

  • Test of Time – For the game that manages to be just as good as it was on launch
  • I’m Not Crying, There’s Something In My Eye – For that game that tugs at your heartstrings
  • Just 5 More Minutes – For that game that keeps you going longer as you just want to finish one last thing…
  • Whoooaaaaaaa, Dude – For that game that blows your mind
  • Villain Most In Need of a Hug – For that all so loveable Villain
  • Game Within a Game – For that great minigame that you want to celebrate
  • I Thought This Game Was Cool Before It Won An Award – For that game that lacked much marketing but was great and got shared by word of mouth
  • Best Use of a Farm Animal – For the game that makes the best use of a farm animal
  • We Didn’t Think of Everything – The Write-In category!

For players who need a reason other than promoting a game that they’ve enjoyed there is a badge that you can receive for your profile for voting with 4 different tasks associated to it; nominating a game, nominating a game for each category, playing a game that you’ve nominated, and reviewing a game that you’ve nominated. Once you’ve completed a task you earn the badge but you can upgrade the badge with each sequential task cleared, and yes you also gain additional XP for your profile by upgrading your badge.

If you’re looking for other deals, be sure to check out our Black Friday Shopping Guide which has a lot of games for PC and other platforms.

Is there any game currently on sale that you’d recommend? What do you think of Steam having their own awards? Are there any that you think really deserve the win? Share your ballot list and thoughts in the comments below!

I have been playing all kinds of games for as long as I can remember with a particular interest in action adventure and platforming titles. While I am primarily an Xbox gamer I also spend a fair bit of time on the PS4 and on my PC in VR.
