Electronic Arts has unveiled its first trailer for Star Wars: Battlefront, the upcoming multiplayer shooter set in the Star Wars universe from Battlefield developers EA Digital Illusions CE. Star Wars: Battlefront is the third game in the Star Wars: Battlefront series, which began with another game also called Star Wars: Battlefront in 2004, making it arguably the laziest name in video game history. The trailer, luckily, is considerably more interesting.
Like its predecessor, Star Wars: Battlefront features large-scale battles in the Star Wars universe during the era of the original trilogy, with players fighting on foot or in vehicles like speeder bikes, AT-AT walkers. TIE fighters, and X-Wings. In addition to regular Imperial or Rebel troops, you’ll also be able to play as iconic characters like Darth Vader and Boba Fett. The focus will be on multiplayer, with battles featuring up to 20 players on each side. (Presumably with some sort of mechanism to prevent every battle from degenerating into a clash between 20 Darth Vaders and 20 Boba Fetts.)
Battlefields will include old standbys like Hoth- which, with the possible exception of D-Day, must be the most reenacted battle in video game history at this point- Endor, and Tatooine, as well as lesser-known corners of the Star Wars universe like Sullust. The game will also tie in to the upcoming movie Star Wars: The Force Awakens with free downloadable content planned for release two weeks before the movie hits theaters on December 18th. This new stage will be based on the Battle of Jakku, the desolate-looking, debris-strewn planet that features prominently in the movie’s recently released new trailer, set three decades before the events of The Force Awakens.
Which better mean we get to actually see that Star Destroyer go down in flames and crash into the planet.
EA has announced that Star Wars: Battlefront will be released on November 17th, confirming previous rumors started by an accidental leak on the game’s website. It’ll be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
