Pyre, the upcoming game from the developers behind Transistor and Bastion, finally has a release date. The game will be coming to both the PlayStation 4 and PC on July 25. Creative director Greg Kasavin from Supergiant Games announced the release date on the PlayStation Blog on Tuesday.
The game is currently available slightly discounted on the PlayStation Store and Steam for pre-order. While Pyre will normally cost $19.99, you can pre-order it now for 10% off, bringing the price down to $17.99. Sure, it’s not a big discount, but it’s better than nothing. Right?
On top of the release date announcement, creative director Kasavin also revealed some new information concerning the game. However, before we get into the new stuff, allow me to recap what we know about Pyre so far.
Pyre was announced back in April of last year, and with that announcement, we learned the premise of the game. Basically, you play as someone who’s been outcasted and must pass a series of competitions called the Rites in order to reenter society. The Rites are where the gameplay comes in. For each battle, you can choose 3 people from your party to play on your “team” for that round. The goal of each match is to extinguish the other team’s flame on their side of the court, while only controlling one of your characters at a time.

Okay, now onto new business. The biggest piece of new information that Supergiant Games revealed today was that unlike in most games, losing in Pyre doesn’t just bring you to a Game Over screen so that you can restart the match and try again. Instead, the loss will apparently affect the game’s story and lead the narrative into another branching path.
One of the unique aspects of Pyre is how you are never forced to lose progress. Whether you prevail or fail, your journey continues. The interactive narrative is expressed through a story that should feel personal to you, and that no two players will experience in quite the same way.
As for multiplayer, Supergiant Games cleared up a few things that they left up in the air after they announced that local-multiplayer would be coming to Pyre back in December of last year. At the time, the studio would only confirm a local two-player Versus Mode. However, they said that they would consider adding online multiplayer, and that they were also working on a player vs computer Versus Mode. Today, the studio confirmed that you will be able to play the mode against the computer, but did not mention anything about an online option, which suggests that the game probably won’t have any online multiplayer component.
The developers also revealed some more general information about Pyre. The blog post says that after working on the game for almost three years now, Supergiant Games can now confirm that Pyre is the biggest game they’ve created so far. Also, Pyre will feature music from Darren Korb, the man responsible for much of the Transistor and Bastion soundtracks.
