The development studio Supergiant Games announced on Saturday through a post on the PlayStation Blog that their upcoming game, Pyre, will include a one-on-one multiplayer mode.

Here is the reveal trailer for the newly announced game mode, that debuted at the PlayStation Experience:

Pyre was first revealed back in April of this year, and since then, Supergiant Games hasn't revealed much about the game. While the game has been playable at multiple events throughout the year, it wasn't until this year's PlayStation Experience that the developers revealed new, substantial information concerning the game in the form of a new game mode reveal.

The new Versus Mode coming to the game is a head-to-head game mode that works the same way as the "ritual competitions" in the game's single-player campaign. Basically, it is your job to extinguish your opponent's flame on their side of the arena using a special orb/ball. The catch is that you can only move one of your three party members at a time, and each of these members has unique abilities to help get the ball to your opponents flame.

These game rules are the same for both the single-player campaign battles and the Versus Mode one-on-one battles.

The developers behind Pyre stressed in their blog post that the multiplayer mode is not meant to take away from the single-player content.

Pyre is a party-based RPG that will have a two-player head-to-head Versus Mode in it, in addition to the single-player campaign. Think of the multiplayer as a bonus on top of the single-player.

Our focus during development has first and foremost been the single-player campaign experience, and creating the interesting and memorable cast of characters you’ll get to know during your journey.

Another thing that the blog post talked about was the decision to make the game mode local multiplayer only. Well, for now at least. The studio has not yet decided if they want to extend this feature to include online play.
We haven’t made a decision yet on whether online play makes sense given everything else we’re doing on Pyre with our small team. We think bad online multiplayer is worse for a game than no online multiplayer, and we promise to do what’s best for the game as a whole.
Supergiant games also stated that they plan to support a single-player Versus Mode, which would have you playing against the computer instead.

Pyre is being developed and published by Supergiant Games, the development studio behind Bastion and Transistor and is expected to release sometime in 2017. The game will come out on both the PlayStation 4 and PC.

What do you think about the decision to add a multiplayer aspect to the game? Are you excited for Pyre? Let us know in the comment section below!
