In 1605, the Jokkmokk winter market was established in Sweden. It is a market that is held in January and lasts for 2-3 weeks. It was originally the result of a decree by King Karl IX to establish permanent marketplaces in order to make it easier to collect taxes and spread Christianity. It is a tradition that has continued into the modern day, with the market transitioning to a winter festival. Hundreds of visitors arrive from around the world to take in the scenery and partake in local treats and activities. Now, Wizkids wants to bring some of the charms of this real-world market with a Jokkmokk: The Winter Market board game.
Jokkmokk: The Winter Market board game announcement
According to an official press release from Wizkids, Jokkmokk: The Winter Market board game is a set collection game. You control a family and guide them through the winter festival, gaining experiences, food, souvenirs, and more. Your family consists of two meeples. Up to five players can participate in a single game, controlling ten meeples total. Each experience, item, or attraction is part of a set. Whoever has the most complete sets by the end wins the game.
Jokkmokk: The Winter Market board game is built with some modular variety. An individual game uses six different decks of cards, each one representing a type of item or experience. Each copy of the game contains eighteen different decks, which gives the game some replay value. One game may have you collecting Dalecarlian Horses and antiques. Another will have you collecting Bells, Sparklers, and Fika. Finally, the artwork featured in the board game invokes an old-world charm thanks to professional illustrator Christina Hägerfors.
Jokkmokk: The Winter Market board game is available for pre-order on Wizkids' store page. It is being sold at an MSRP of $34.99 and is set to release in Q4 2023.
