The Game Boy released on April 21, 1989 in Japan, with a North American release following a few months later. As Nintendo's first handheld console, it found success thanks to its competitive price and a duo of strong release titles Super Mario Land and Tetris.
During its life, the Game Boy received two revisions — the Game Boy Pocket featured a sleeker design, while the Japan-only Game Boy Light had backlight support. The latter was notable, since the standard Game Boy was notorious for being hard to view unless in direct sunlight (something that would also be the case for its successors).
