Star Wars is ramping up for a new video game courtesy of Ubisoft, revealed today during Microsoft's Xbox Showcase. Titled Star Wars Outlaws and in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC for a release in 2024, we're given a look at a lengthy CG trailer introducing the main character - a scoundrel by the name of Kay Vess.
Billed as the first-ever open-world Star Wars game, Star Wars Outlaws is set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi films.
As Kay, voiced by Humberly González, expect to explore key planets across the galaxy, from familiar and all-new. Kay will have to risk it all as she seeks freedom and the means to start a new life along with her companion called Nix. She'll have to fight, steal and outwit the galaxy's greatest crime syndicates as you join the ranks of the most wanted criminals.
"When we first imagined the first open-world Star Wars game, we explored where and when it could take place, and quickly realized that we had all the right ingredients for the journey of a scoundrel. These outlaws live life under the thumb of the Galactic Empire, but can still thrive given the opportunities that the criminal underworld opens up for people looking to take advantage of the turmoil,” said Julian Gerighty, Creative Director at Massive Entertainment.
Vice president of Lucasfilm Games Douglas Reilly also chimed in with some comments. He said, “With Star Wars Outlaws, we’re excited to deliver the first truly open world Star Wars game, with an action-adventure story filled with characters and planets both new and well-known to the Star Wars galaxy. We have been working closely with the talented team at Massive Entertainment, and with their years of experience in creating richly-detailed worlds, we’re excited for fans to be able to jump into the Star Wars scoundrel fantasy like never before.”
Whilst the premiere trailer was cinematic in nature, Ubisoft is promising a full-on gameplay reveal during their Ubisoft Forward event starting at 10 AM PST on June 12. More details on how Star Wars Outlaws will actually play are likely to be revealed then. In the meantime, you can catch the announcement trailer below.
