After its release last week, Splatoon is already getting its first batch of free downloadable content today.

Splatoon's official twitter has just announced that the newly released game from Nintendo will be getting a new map and weapon later tonight. The new map is designated as Port Mackerel, and looks to feature open areas in an industrial setting. Meanwhile, the new weapon is styled after the classic NES Zapper and is said to feature a high rate of fire.

In addition, Nintendo has announced that enough players have gained experience in the game's multiplayer mode, and now the anticipated Ranked Mode will be unlocked today also. Players are required to reach level ten before being able to access this mode. Here, players will fight in more competitive matches where personal rank is put on the line. Ranked Mode also brings with it a new game type called Splat Zone, players will have to fight over control of a select number of areas of the map on this king of the hill style battle.

Things look to just be getting started though. With an additional three maps shown, and as many as nine more hinted at, the game's map selection will be expanding quickly from it's initially small offering of five maps. Several new weapons, including a fast moving paint brush, have also been previously revealed.

In addition, the Splatoon's players will be gearing up for the release of the first of a series of events called Splatfests, where players must pick one of two teams to represent in game before fighting to secure that team's victory. The first event has been previously announced to be cats versus dogs. Participation in these events will earn players special items that can be used to reroll existing passive abilities of a piece of gear, or even add new slots for more passive abilities in gear.
