After what must have felt like an eternity, hardcore platformer fans are finally getting the news they've been waiting for: the Spelunky 2 release date has been revealed during today's PlayStation State of Play stream.
Have a gander at the Spelunky 2 State of Play Release Date Trailer to see some more of this controller-throwing platformer in action!
Unlike some game presentations in today's State of Play, the Spelunky 2 trailer was narrated by the game's creator Derek Yu. He emphasized that he wanted to make the game feel welcoming despite its difficulty; that's one of the reasons why it will have online multiplayer baked in from day one. (It should be noted that PlayStation gamers will need an active PlayStation Plus membership to use online multiplayer.
Deathmatch will also be expanded into something much bigger: the Arena. The Arena features Deathmatch alongside a new competitive mode called "Hold the Idol."
The devs also addressed the topic of Adventure Mode in a PlayStation Blog post. The overall length of a run should be roughly the same as one in the first Spelunky, but players will get to enjoy a greater and denser variety of gameplay in each successive run.
Part of that variety will be thanks to the roster of characters that you can use. As you play through the game, you'll be "building a community of characters;" this mix of old and new cave divers will give you a lot of options for your journey in search of an epic adventure.
When is the Spelunky 2 Release Date?
"A big thanks to the fans who've waited patiently for us to finish Spelunky 2," said the game's creator Derek Yu. "It's been a long journey, but I think it's going to be worth it. Thanks."
Following this heartwarming thanks from the game's creator, we got the big reveal: the Spelunky 2 release date is September 15, 2020.
Spelunky 2 should be making its way to Steam and other platforms, although we can't say for sure if it's going to be sharing the September 2020 release date just yet. Either way, PS4 gamers will be able to enjoy this terrifically-challenging platformer in just over a month.
