Following a disappointing delay, the Spelunky 2 release date is expected to be coming sometime in 2020 according to a recent announcement from the developer.
If you're unfamiliar with this particular game, check out the Spelunky 2 gameplay trailer to get a feel for what's on the way:
Spelunky 2 is the aptly-named sequel to Spelunky, a roguelite game that's a cult classic among gamers who love a challenge. Players dive into treacherous locations in search of fantastic treasure, but they'll have to contend with deadly traps and even deadlier enemies.
The upcoming sequel to Spelunky was first announced at Paris Games Week 2017. To date, there has not yet been an official Spelunky 2 release date. It could have potentially launched in 2019, but it was pushed back to sometime in 2020. Now, we have a somewhat better idea of when we'll be able to play this great roguelite game!
When is the Spelunky 2 release date?
Derek Yu has been pretty quiet on the development of his next hotly-anticipated game and many of us have been wondering: when is the Spelunky 2 release date? Mr. Yu addresses the topic in a recent Twitter thread.
"@strotchy and I are on both [UFO 50 and Spelunky 2] and at some point we knew we'd have to focus on one to finish it off before going back to the other," developer Derek Yu said on Twitter. "Well, that time has come and we're going [all-in] on #Spelunky2 to release it this year! We'll holler when we know exactly when."
Unfortunately, Mr. Yu declined to announce a more specific release date. He did take the time to mention that both Spelunky 2 and UFO 50 are in "good shape" and laments the fact that these two titles took longer to develop than they had originally planned.
In the meantime, you can get the original Spelunky DRM-free on GOG right now for just $2.99, an 80% discount off of its normal price. You can also pick it up at its full price on Steam.
